115 Year Old WA Brick Plant Celebrates Renewal

One of WA’s long history of brick kilns, heritage listed Maylands Brickworks.

Built in 1903 and closed in 2012 due to a slump in demand for bricks, the Cardup brickwork plant has now had a major capital injection by current owners Austral Bricks ($26 million). In 2018 the kiln is again making high quality product for the construction industry with an even broader range than previously available.

Due to the outstanding success of the recent “Brick & Blocklaying Apprenticeship Ready Course” held at SMTAFE Thornlie recently, the Australian Brick and Blocking Training Foundation (ABBTF) in WA is planning to repeat the course at the same location in the week of Monday April 9.

New, Free Mentoring Support to Aid Apprenticeship Completions

Good news for bricklaying apprentices and their employers with the announcement by the Federal Government of financial support to address the real need for mentoring apprentices during the crucial first two years of training. In WA, Skill Hire is offering this program and specific providers have been appointed for other States.
