The Bricklaying event regularly produces world class talent as evident in Bricklaying’s WorldSkills International Honour Roll and our inclusion in the International’s over many years. The ABBTF Gun Trowel event, not to be missed, is a spectator thriller demanding highly disciplined time and motion actions as well as skill. Like every year, ABBTF is a proud sponsor of the Gun Trowel event this year as well and will be providing the Trophy at the event.Australia’s most skilled young tradespeople will compete in live competitions, aiming to represent their country at the 45th WorldSkills International Competition in Kazan, Russia, August 2019.
The 2018 WorldSkills Australia National Bricklaying Competitors
A strong field of 12 Apprentices have made it to the final in the Bricklaying 2018 WorldSkills Australia National Championship, having won their Regional competition. Ten individuals are competing for the first time and three have previously won a Regional and taken part in the last National, in 2016 in Melbourne
Three regions each are represented in NSW, WA and Vic, with Qld, Tas, SA and ACT fielding one each competitor. It’s hoped we’ll also have a highly ranked honorary contestant from Russia, reciprocating on recent opportunities Australian International competitors have had to gain more experience outside their own competitive arena.
Why you should be in it? All WorldSkills Regional competitors, winner or not, benefit from the challenge of competing and from improved skills developed in preparing for the event. So if you’re a bricklaying apprentice talk to your trainer or employer about getting involved.

Bricklaying Judges for 2018
A Bricklaying judging team of eight, led by Eric Davis as Chief Judge, will oversee, score and select the winner and two runners up, based on a range of criteria such as accuracy and skill. On the panel from Victoria and the Australian Brick and Blocklaying Training Foundation (ABBTF) and Become-a-Bricklayer for the second time is Michael Taylor, Senior Field Officer for his State. Michael is a qualified bricklayer and trainer with vast experience in the industry generally and in identifying quality bricklaying talent, specifically.
